Online sit and go poker tournaments also known as sit n go's or SNG's are single table, 9 or 10 player tournaments, where the top three finishers win the cash. Example: A $10 tournament would pay $50 for first place, $30 for second and $20 for third. Single table poker tournaments are also excellent practice for playing the final table of multi-table tournaments. The strategies for both are essentially the same. Sit n Go's tournament are really great if you're pressed for time, taking about 40 min's to an hour to play, compared to several hours for a large multi-table event.
Here is the winning strategy I use for low limit ($5-$50) online Texas Holdem sit n go's. This method works especially well for me at PartyPoker.com and PokerStars.com but it will work equally as well at any online poker site where you can find impatient, inexperienced poker tournament players ready to give you their cash..
- My basic winning strategy for limit and no-limit Texas Holdem SNG tournaments is to play super tight, play only premium hands in the opening rounds. Let all the maniacs get take out. The premium hands you should be playing are: A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, A-K, and A-K to A-10 suited. You can add a few more hands like 10-10 or 9-9 to the list if you like, but be very careful playing these lower rated hands early on, concentrate on just surviving. As the game progresses you can play more hands and become more aggressive.
- Don't be a calling-station. Bet and raise aggressively when you have powerful hands. Aggressive players have two ways to win the pot, the show down when you win with the best hand or everyone folds and you pick up the pot uncontested.
- If you are playing aggressive opponents, check and let them do the betting for you when you have a very strong hand. Trapping your opponent this way will allow you to win more chips by just flat calling their bets. By doing this you let your opponent think he has the best hand and your are chasing your hand. Then after the river card you go for the big check re-raise. Hopefully by this time your opponent is pot committed and he will find it very hard to lay down his hand and you can take him out or at least leave him with a small chip stack.
- If you become short stacked you will have little choice but to go all-in with any two decent cards. This is a desperation play. You're hoping no one has a hand and you can pick up the blinds uncontested. Even if you are called you may get lucky and double up your stack. Don't be afraid to make bold plays if the situation warrants such a move, it's better this than to sit and get eating up by the blinds.
- If you find yourself with a large stack of chips late in a SNG (sit and go) tournament, play aggressively against the shorter stacked players who are desperate to make it into the top three. You be surprised just how often the short stacks fold their big blind to a strong raise.
- Always closely observe your opponents playing style (tight, loose, aggressive or passive) and pick out who will, and who won't defend their blinds.
